By Air:
The most convenient way to reach Kathmandu is by taking a direct flight from India. Tribhuvan International Airport, located just 6 km from the city center, is well-connected with major Indian cities like Delhi and Kolkata. Direct flights operate regularly, with an average travel time of approximately 1.5 hours.
By Rail:
Nepal has limited direct rail connectivity from India, with one direct train operating from Jainagar (Bihar) to Janakpur in Nepal, followed by a road journey to Kathmandu. A more popular option is to board a train to Gorakhpur or Raxaul—well-linked to major Indian cities—and then continue the journey to Kathmandu by cab or bus.
By Road:
Nepal can also be reached via six accessible Indo-Nepal border crossings, making road travel both economical and scenic. Travelers from Delhi or Varanasi often prefer the Sunauli–Bhairahawa route, with daily AC buses and private taxis available. Other commonly used crossings include Raxaul (from Patna) and Panitanki (from West Bengal).
